Elassona, built at the foot of Mount Olympus, has retained its ancient name, Oloson, almost unchanged, as it is referred to in Homer as “White Oloson.” The city participated in the Trojan War with 40 ships under Polypus, proving its historical significance.
Today, Elassona is the northwestern gateway to Mount Olympus and an ideal starting point for nature lovers, mountaineers, and visitors who want to explore the mythical mountain in all seasons. From here, trails lead to peaks, refuges, and picturesque mountain villages.
At the same time, the area maintains its rural identity, with a strong presence in agriculture and livestock farming. PDO products such as feta cheese and Elassona goat cheese stand out and are honored in September at the Feta Festival with culinary events and traditional cheese-making demonstrations. Elassona combines history, nature, and tradition in an experience of authentic Thessalian hospitality.
